Jammu,the Winter capital city of J&K , is also known as the city of temples. But if we ask anyone outside the J&K, he/she doesnt know that.
Why is it so?
- No one knows that Jammu is culturally, linguistically, climatically totally different from Kashmir.
- No one knows that the maximum population in Jammu is of Dogras, although they (outside J&K residents) don?t know Who are DOGRAS??What is this DOGRA community all about??They think that Jammu and Kashmir both are the same.
Who is responsible for such Identity Crisis?
I, as a part of our Dogra community, feel?such identity crisis when i move out of Jammu Region. Not only me, but 90% of the JAMMUITES (Dogras, Bhaderwahis, Kishtwaris, Poonchis) who have moved out of Jammu, for?job or studies,?feel such Identity crisis. Why is it so and Who is responsible for such identity crisis?
I feel,we the Jammuites, are the main culprits for such identity Crisis. We, the Jammuites, have never??ever given any respect to? our motherland, culture, language but we always blame politicians for that. But are those politicians really responsible for our identity crisis outside J&K. My answer will be NO.. But among the common masses there isn?t any respect for our culture and our language, A city or state is known for the quality of the residents residing there. That?s why someone has rightly said that “People are the wealth of Nation”.
Real Wealth: A ?person’s intelligence connecting with innovation, creativity and social consciousness, neighbours helping neighbours and corporations and networks helping people. But Are we, the Jammuites, helping corporations in that, instead of cursing them?
1. Have ?we ever protested against the name of KAS(KASHMIR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES),if our state’s name is ?JAMMU? and Kashmir then why can?t the name be JKAS?
2. Had we ever protested against the different maps published where the state’s capital is always published as SRINAGAR?If? we have two capitals,then why is there no mention of the two capitals?
3. Have we ever protested against that In our schools, we don?t have a single chapter on J&K’s History? Is it because the Dogras ruled the state most of the time?
4. Have we ever protested against the media who also loves to give more attention to Kashmir?
5. If? some good?incident ?happens in Kashmir then the media publishes it as to be the happening in KASHMIR ?only. But if some bad thing happens, then the same biased media publishes it as to be the happening in JAMMU & KASHMIR.And whatever happens in Jammu, it hardly comes in national media except those terrorist attacks. ( e.g., The Sex scandal which happened in Kashmir valley,the media?named it as the ?J&K?Sex Scandal?? but when Anara Gupta’s incident took place, the same media named it as Jammu Scandal?)Why is it so???
Why do we The Jammuites, never protested against that?
I know only these protests? are not going to help us, but with a little bit of protest against all these discriminations can bring us in the limelight and will help us to wake up all those JAMMUITES, who are the victims of such situations.I think it?s the time pay tribute to all those great Dogras who spent their whole life working for JAMMU.

We, Dogras, are peace loving and simple people. Confrontation is what we hate. We believe in ‘Live and Let Live’.
The answer to your questions is simple and you see them, hear them day in and day out.
1. What our parents tell us when we get angry/frustrated over some thing?
2. Have our families ever asked us to fight for what is wrong?
3. Have we ever grouped as one?
4. We in Jammu believe in ‘Apni Dafli, Apna Raag’.
5. How many times sinceyour childhood, we have spoken Dogri in School, College or University? Not many, I can bet.
6. Have you ever worn Dogri dresses at personal functions and rituals?
Look at the Kashmiri pandits. They always converse in Kashmiri, come what may.
The main difference between them and us is that they are proud of their culture and we are not ashamed of ours but not proud either.
Come on guys!!!
Be realistic, we are the youth. We have the power.
Educate and be educated. Go for KAS, J&K Bank and other state avenues. All top officers in J&K are either Muslims or Kashmiris. Where are we, the Dogras?
We are so engrossed in casteism that we can’t think otherwise. I’ve never in my life met any one from Jammu who isn’t interested in what my surname is because I always prefer using my first name. I find such people even in the US. But that’s another story. And I’ll continue on this later.
Sach/Parul, you are right when you say that people can’t differentiate between Jammu and Kashmir. And I had a real tough time in England when I told my colleagues that I’m from Jammu, J&K. All that the British knew about Jammu was that the state is called J&K and it’s a DISPUTED territory between India and Pakistan. Believe me I had a real tough time convincing them what Jammu is and who Dogras are.
Anyway, this is a very common problem as you said. But at least we acknowledge that it is a problem.
Let’s come together and see what exactly can we do and how can we contribute.

Ya exactly……for this identity crisis……i will blame only parents of ours who thinks that dogri is a language of an illiterate….even we think the same way until we didnt move out of our state…….why we dont create our own identity in our own state instead of feeling identity crisis when we move out……
its right time we change the mindset of people and make younger generation specially in schools to talk in dogri…..otherwise that day isnt far away when we have no identity and feel the discrimination……but we always blame administration for that discrimination…..

I am truly accepting all the points mentioned from side but according to me biggest reason for whole such identity crisis is, we jammuties dont have any political leader to represent us either in the state assembly nor in the parliament, As you had mentioned that kashmir is always gaining attention, according to me the only reason for this kashmir has the leaders who are there to represent the kaskmir (Farooq abdulha, umar abdulha , Mabhuda musfti and several others.
But if ask you to name any single leader from jammu (there will be no one )
The second and mist common reason for the identity crisis for the jammuties was majority of people from the jammu ( want their children to learn english or hindi, no one is bother about the the mother tongue.people consider the hindi and english as the status symbol and those who speaks Dogri mixes this language so much with the punjabi that it’s difficult for the outsider to distinguish between and dogri and punjabi.
But we all can change this , we can provide our mother land the identity which she deserves.
We all need a come together, way we united for Amarth land.

Kashmir is having leaders because they are aware of their problem but in Jammu we only love blaming others and no one loves to take responsibility on their own.as someone had rightly said in hindi ki”Dusre ke fatte main hum kyun apna hath ganda kare”

Thats why we dont have such leader.That leader only comes in between of us so why dont we take responsibility and come forward and found that good leader which can put our voice in front of everyone.

i always tried my best to speak in dogri….but the problem is I dont have so much command on dogri.thts why i sometimes try to skip dogri in some places
But the time has come that we people start learning dogri and tak in dogri too.because the language is the main factor in giving u some Identity
and i want to clear one thing here dogri language is origined from Udhampur and dogra community rise from nearby areas of mansar and surinsar lakes
net power is the most powerful thing at present …but jammu youth these days prefer to do only chat with girls on orkut and facebook and vice versa
70% of population still lives in rural areas and only these people have some respect for our mothertongue but the bad thing is that This 70% population is mostly illiterate
